VA & NY Primaries (6/18/23)

Let’s not get caught up in the circus surrounding Trump's indictments. While the legal proceedings and controversies will dominate the headlines and consume public attention, we must remember that real change occurs through consistent, everyday efforts and active participation in the democratic process.

The strength of a democracy lies in the collective actions of its citizens. By engaging in the daily work of saving democracy, we can make a lasting impact. We’ve been doing this work and cannot stop! We must stay informed about the issues that affect our society, advocate for causes we believe in, and support candidates and organizations that promote democratic values. Stay focused on our postcarding, phone and text banking, amplifying on social media, donating, and let the circus take a back seat to action. As David Pepper says “Don’t let the chaos keep you from all the work you can be doing to lift democracy NOW. To save democracy, that work is MORE important. And it’s where YOU can make a big difference.”

One of the most powerful tools we have in a democratic society is our vote. Voting in every election, from local to national, allows us to shape the direction of our government and hold our elected officials accountable. It is through the electoral process that we can voice our concerns, support candidates who align with our values, and create positive change in our communities. Our GOTV efforts are imperative. Ignore the indictments and beat him at the ballot box.

This Tuesday, we hope to see high turnout in Virginia's important primary elections. We also hope to see high turnout in NYC's primary elections next Tuesday with early voting starting yesterday. We wrote postcards for both of these elections and we are continuing to write for the Ohio ballot referendum in early August.

While the news cycle may be filled with dramatic developments and controversies surrounding Trump's indictments, it is essential to maintain a long-term perspective. Instead of getting caught up in the circus, let us channel our energy into building a stronger democracy. Let us focus on the issues that truly matter—climate change, economic inequality, healthcare, education, and social justice. By staying engaged, informed, and committed to our democratic principles, we can shape a better future for ourselves and the generations to come.

So, let us not allow the distractions of political drama to overshadow the essential work that lies ahead. Together, through our daily actions and unwavering commitment, we can safeguard our democracy, promote equality, and create a society that truly reflects the values we hold dear. Remember, democracy thrives when we participate, and our votes have the power to shape the course of history. As Michael Arden said at the end of his rousing speech at the Tony Awards, “...vote at every possible moment”.
