Activist Burnout & Recovery (6/4/23)

In today's fast-paced world, where information and news bombard us from every angle, it's easy to become overwhelmed and exhausted by the constant stream of pressing issues that demand our attention. This is especially true for those of us engaged in activism, who tirelessly strive to make a positive impact on society. While the passion and drive behind activism are commendable, it's crucial to recognize the signs of burnout and understand the importance of taking a break. Many of us have been doing this work for years and have realized we will be doing it for the rest of our lives. That means we aren’t going anywhere, and there is room for everyone to find their moment to take a step back and recharge. You will come back more resilient and able to continue our efforts in a sustainable way.

It’s important to remember that taking a break is necessary to avoid “activism burnout”, and that the summer weeks offer a perfect opportunity to take that much-needed break and engage in activities that bring us joy and rejuvenation. Whether it's spending quality time with loved ones, exploring hobbies, connecting with nature, or simply resting and recharging, these moments of self-care are not only essential but also beneficial to the causes we fight for. Pick a book from this extensive summer reading list. Take a tour of a  private garden near you. Check out a free outdoor concert in the city. Pack a blanket and basket and try a new picnic recipe. Bake a totally different kind of pie. Or maybe just find a patch of grass or a hammock and improve your stress levels by listening to bird songs.

Remember, taking a break does not mean giving up on our beliefs or abandoning the causes we care about. It's an act of self-preservation and a necessary step toward long-term sustainability in activism. By prioritizing our well-being, we ensure that we can continue making a difference for years to come.

So, as the summer season approaches, let's embrace the opportunity to step away from the constant hustle and bustle of activism. Take the time to engage in activities that bring you happiness, peace, and fulfillment. Choose your break and use it to reflect, recharge, and reconnect with yourself and the world around you. By doing so, you'll come back stronger, more resilient, and ready to make an even greater impact in the fight for justice and change. Remember, self-care is not selfish; it's a vital part of the journey toward a better future for all.

And remember, when you aren't on a break there is always lots to do. We are working together to help save Democracy, one postcard at a time. Join us when the time is right for you.
