It’s the Election in Front of You (7/17/22)

We are 19 weeks away from the critical midterm elections in November, yet there is a lot of buzz about the 2024 presidential election and who may or may not run. We are here to say ignore the buzz and focus on the election in front of you. We need to hold the House, expand the Senate majority, flip as many state legislative seats as possible, and make sure that election deniers don't end up as governors and secretaries of state in key states. These midterm elections are too important to get caught in the media swirl of speculation about who is running in 2024. Two years is a long time in politics. What happens in November will certainly change the course of what happens in that time. Direct your energy and attention to what we can impact. Organize, message, and rally people to the polls. Now is the time to unify as Democrats and support Democrats running up and down the ballot in November 2022. Dan Pfeiffer, one of the smartest voices on the Democratic spectrum, lays out the consequences for this November:

"The stakes in this election are simply too high. If we lose either the House or Senate, the Biden legislative agenda is DOA for the next two years. If we lose the House, I am nearly certain the GOP House will undertake impeachment proceedings against Biden next year. While they won’t be able to remove the President, impeachment will prove to be a massive distraction and resource drain for the White House. If we lose the Senate, President Biden is unlikely to confirm another judge of consequence in his first term. If we lose key governors’ races, millions more Americans will live in states where abortion is banned and the actions of doctors, women, and others will be criminalized. And if we lose key state races, the Republicans will control the electoral apparatus and be well-positioned to overturn the will of the voters in 2024."

We have 19 weeks. Ask yourself "what can I do this week to help the Democrats win in November?" For some, it will be writing postcards to voters. Others will try a phone bank for introverts. Others may join a canvass. Others will attend a fundraiser. And others will use their social media platform to amplify Democratic candidates and messages including the importance of expanding the Senate majority (and rendering Joe Manchin irrelevant), holding the House, and flipping state legislature seats. Let’s rally people to the polls to vote for the Democrats who want to expand their rights and not take them away. These are tall orders and will require all of us to focus on everything we can do to get Democrats out to vote. We don't have time to get distracted by who may or may not run in 2024. Keep your focus on November, our freedoms depend on it.

P.S. While we are focused on November 2022, there are important elections this summer and because we can multitask, many of us are writing Postcards To Voters right now for a critical election in Kansas in early August. Read more about it in the postcard section. When this campaign is over, we hope to be writing for a special election in late August that is critical for maintaining the House majority between now and January. Stay tuned for more details in the next few weeks. Keep writing!
