Dems show up & win in Iowa Special Election (2/2/25)

This has been a heartbreaking and challenging week. First and foremost, we are holding the families affected by the tragic air crash over the Potomac in our hearts. Their loss is immeasurable, and we send them our deepest condolences and support.

Meanwhile, the chaos we feared with Trump 2.0 has arrived, bringing devastating consequences. He has already imposed 25% tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico, added to existing tariffs against China, and scrubbed the websites of the CDC and USAID. It is terrifying that Musk has total access to the U.S. Treasury website and potentially trillions of dollars. And RFK Jr.’s brazen lies should disqualify him from any position of public trust, let alone one that impacts public health. His appointment would be a dangerous and shameful failure, with real consequences for people’s lives.

And yet, amid the frustration and grief, there are bright spots. Democrats are finding their voices, loud, clear, and uncompromising. We’ve heard it this week from Governor Pritzker, Senator Murphy, and Attorney General Tish James. And we saw proof of what’s possible when we fight: in Iowa, a Trump +21 district flipped blue in a special election, a reminder that Democrats can and do win when we organize and show up. (And Markers For Democracy did show up by writing postcards for the Democratic candidate, Mike Zimmer).

Through all of this, our community remains our greatest strength. Whether it’s through action, discussion, or even something as simple as the virtual book swap we held this week where so many of you passionately shared recommendations across all genres. We are in this together. That’s how we’ll get through the difficult days ahead: by staying connected, supporting one another, and never losing hope.
