Biden’s First Speech to Congress (5/2/21)

This week we had the pleasure of hearing President Joe Biden’s first speech to a joint session of Congress. Seeing the Madam Speaker Pelosi and Madam Vice President Harris sitting at the dais framing the image on our screens was a historical moment long overdue and filled with joy. President Biden's speech that followed reflected a leader with humility and grace who delivered accomplishments without self-congratulation, offering bold and ambitious goals and providing an ever-hopeful moment in time. President Biden has monumental tasks ahead of him in a country facing polarization and enormous struggles, yet the scope and scale of his agenda is to be applauded. From his first tweet in office on day one, “today, I am heading to the Oval Office to get right to work delivering bold action and immediate relief for American families”, President Biden has shown the doubters that we picked the right man for the job. As Robert Hubbell said, “they were not expecting a man who has both the vision and the courage of his convictions to move America forward with confidence and vigor.”

We have a steady leader who has compassion, experience, and dignity and who aims to heal a divided America.

At the heart of President’s Biden’s speech was the reminder that the story of this moment continues to be the struggle to preserve democracy. On his trip to Georgia this week marking his 100th day in office, President Biden said, “If you ever wonder if elections make a difference, just remember what you did here in Georgia.... You changed America.” Those words remind us of our marching orders. In keeping with our mission to use daily engagement in postcard writing and other activities to promote the election of Democrats up and down the ballot all over the country, we must stay focused. Preserving our democracy depends on it. Scroll down to our postcarding section and action items for actions to take this week to help preserve our democracy.
